Village News from the
September 2010 ‘Parish Paper

Editorial
It’s good to get feedback from our readers, whether complimentary or otherwise.  If you can write a short piece for the Parish Paper, so much the better, and we’ll publish it, providing it isn’t likely to cause personal upset to others: we do reserve the right to edit pieces before publication.

Would you like to announce any special family or friend’s event in the parish magazine? If so please send details to either William Marsterson or Mick Harverson by the 15th of the month.

Just to start the ball rolling we would like to congratulate Jack and Audrey Field (who came to live in Blanche Lane on the 1st of August 1958) on their Diamond Wedding Anniversary on the 16th September, and also to wish Audrey a very happy 80th birthday on the 14th September.

We also send our congratulations to Sandie and John Martin from Brookside who celebrate their Ruby Wedding Anniversary on the 5th September. We sincerely hope that both couples enjoy their special days...

St Margaret’s News

HARVEST FESTIVAL - Sunday 3rd October at 9.15 am.

There will be a friendly family service to celebrate the harvest which is very relevant to the ecclesiastical parish of Ridge. Within this area there are around 10 farms, some mainly arable others supplying the needs of animals in their care. We also think of our harvest on our allotments or in our gardens.

Come and join us for traditional harvest hymns,
hear the address by a visiting preacher and stay for a HARVEST BREAKFAST.

The Pet Service

The service was friendly there being 27 adults, 6 children, 9 dogs, 1 cat and a stand in cat for the one which decided to disappear at the last minute. It is amazing how well-behaved the animals were from the small terriers to the Labrador, the glamorous to the scruffy, those who liked to sit on the pew and those who wandered underneath or curled up by their owners’ feet.

Everyone was able to enjoy the animal shaped biscuits made by Brenda, or the dog biscuits which looked like small sausage rolls.

ST. GILES CHURCHYARD

Having lived in South Mymms for nearly 60 years, there are many of my family and close friends whose last resting place is in St. Giles Churchyard. I regularly visit the churchyard
to tend my family graves as do many other people and I was very concerned to see the mindless damage caused to man-hole covers.

I recently attended the Parish Council meeting on 8th July, which was very well attended, and raised the problem of vandalism in the churchyard. Although it would probably be a lengthy and complicated procedure, it is my opinion that the right of way through the churchyard should be closed and that access should only be allowed for those attending church services, tending family graves and working in the churchyard in any authorised form.

It is common to see people “hanging around” the churchyard for no legitimate reason.
There are other public areas where they could congregate.
Why do they need to be in the churchyard in the first place? After all one day they may be there for a VERY long time!

To those who have been vandalising the churchyard, please respect those who use it and
are buried there and please don’t use it as a place to sit, smoke and drink.

If you have views on this matter, I suggest you write to the Parish Council as I intend to do. Elected representatives are there to consider the views of the village and I am sure they would welcome any input you may have.

Replacement Benches-Dave Harding

Further to your article in the June 2010 South Mimms and Ridge Parish Paper regarding
the replacement of the two benches by the War Memorial in memory of Dave Harding,
I am writing to thank everyone who has been involved in making this possible.

It is very comforting to know that Dave is still highly thought of even though it is
18 years since he died.

Dave loved this village and said it was the best place on earth.

Thank you all once again for your kind thoughts and I am sure Agnes Quinlivan’s family
feel the same.

                                                                                         Sylvia Harding.
