THE WEARING OF THE GREEN

Our major political parties have recently been holding their annual bean feasts and jamborees, I expect you all noticed.

I couldn’t help feeing that the Green Party were ‘mugged’ by the others, who are now posturing in their clothes.  The poor old Greens trampled under foot.  Changing horses in mid-stream hardly comes into it. Never the less it’s a correct move, if it were to be sincere.

For years we have been told that greed is good.  Good for the economy, good for jobs, good for prosperity, growth, and industry, good for the country and us.  You name it is good.  Go out there and grab it, be as hedonistic as you like.
Now they are trying to build up enough courage to say hang on a minute we might have got it wrong. Stop. The ice cap is melting, there’s a hole in the ozone layer. The atmosphere is polluted, the coral is dying and we are trashing the soil. Once fertile land is now desert. We should have left the coal and the oil in the ground.

Who I wonder is going to have the guts to explain it all to Jeremy Clarkson. Jeremy, who wouldn’t be seen dead in a woolly hat or riding a bike, who would only be found hugging a tree if it were one he had just wrapped his car around . Who is going to say to him, put it in reverse mate, its back to the Stone Age, quick as you like.

Bit drastic you might think, I’m not so sure.

Meanwhile on the other side of the Atlantic, we have just had another shooting tragedy.  This time in an Amish school.  I don’t want to talk about the shooting itself, or comment on the American gun culture. The Amish sect is a fascinating one. These people are a highly organised group who appear to be self-sufficient; they take only what they need for sustenance and survival from this earth and get their pleasure from providing food, shelter, warmth and love for each other. A bit like the Native Americans who were all but wiped out, by  the good guys.

The Amish seem to get by alright, without  phones and TV sets and the other essentials that we have.  Religion  aside, they are the true Greens.  They are not playing at it, as we appear to be doing, being green actually works for them and has been for a couple of hundred years. It might be that we could learn something from these curious people with funny hats and beards.

WHAT DO YOU THINK?
A response to this would be nice, even a hostile one.
