School Travel Plan

Dear Residents of the Parish of South Mymms & Ridge,

My name is Tracey Johns and I’m the School Travel Plan Coordinator for St. Giles’ C of E Primary School; I’m also a parent of children who attend the village school and a local resident.  Our School Travel Plan committee comprises: St. Giles’ Head Teacher, School Travel Plan Coordinator, the School Governor for Health & Safety, parents both local and from Potters Bar, local residents and the Police Community Support Officer.

In order to promote healthier lifestyles and safer travel many schools now have a Travel Plan. By looking at how we can promote safer routes to school and use fewer car journeys our Travel Plan aims to ensure that everyone travelling to and from the school do so as safely as possible.

We shall encourage those travelling to the school to use environmentally friendly modes of transport and to be aware of the needs of those living in the immediate vicinity of the school.  We believe this contributes to the health, safety and developing independence of pupils and good relationships with our neighbours.

We are pursuing ‘car sharing’ and are in the process of setting up ‘Walking Buses’ to alleviate parking congestion outside the school.

Of course, we recognise that we cannot achieve this without the support and co-operation of the local community.

We are already aware of some significant risks to the success of this plan.  This includes:-

The speed and weight of traffic passing through the village;

  • The lack of a pedestrian crossing in Blanche Lane;
  • The misuse of the one-way system around the island opposite Glebeland;
  • Parking on the ‘School’ zig-zag lines outside the school;
  • Insufficient school signage and road markings warning drivers.
  • As a Committee we will continue to lobby the local Council and the Highways Department to make improvements, but we also need your help to minimise these risks. If you feel you could communicate the needs of the villagers to the committee or help us in any way possible, you would be more than welcome to come and join us.
  • Please forward your suggestions and/or concerns in writing to the school office.
    Should you wish to speak with me my telephone number is available from the school office, alternatively you may wish to speak with our PCSO Gregory Thompson (tel. 01727-796 630)
    or the visiting Police Mobile.

    For your information St. Giles’ will be promoting ‘Walk to School Week’  21-25 May 2007.

    Thank you.
