Canon Brenda will be holding a weekly ‘Surgery’ at the Vicarage, Hamilton Close
South Mymms, on Saturdays from 10.00 am – noon.
For anyone who wishes to speak to her. No appointment necessary

Brenda is always happy to receive requests for prayer, or for a listening ear, whether on an occasional or a regular basis. It would be helpful, where possible, if contacts about non-urgent matters could avoid Wednesdays and Thursdays - but of course contact her at any time when necessary.  And she would be grateful to be told about illnesses or other emergencies affecting people living in the parishes.

May’s letter from Canon Brenda Tipping

I was recently in a card shop and noticed a card which bore the words “Friendship is generously given, gratefully received and of great value”. I think that is very true, it is quite easy to undervalue our friends, to take them for granted, whether they are close friends that we see regularly or that we may only see occasionally. It’s when life gets difficult, such as at a time of bereavement that we recognise how important the support and messages of encouragement and just the knowledge that there are people out there that really care about you are.

In this day and age when so many people have moved around the country, or indeed, around the world, we are likely to have friends in far flung places. Of course keeping in contact is no longer difficult; with different technologies such as Skype and Facebook it’s quick, easy and relatively cheap. However there is no doubt that such technologies and methods of communication carry risks. There have been a number of cases in the news about people who have tweeted in haste and later regretted it and suffered the consequences. As a school governor I was recently required to gain an E-safety certificate. This involved working my way through an online learning pack and finally passing the exam. It was very sobering to realise what risks there are for children using social networking and mobile messaging, where they may not really know who they are communicating with, and all of us who care for children are responsible for ensuring that the risks are minimised. Having said that, it does not diminish the fact that we all need friends, and children need to learn how to appreciate them. Jesus was a living example of the need of friends as he travelled surrounded by his disciples and was never afraid to discuss the need for love and care of one another.
