February’s letter from Rev’d Brenda Tipping
Two weeks into 2012 Christmas seems to be a long way behind us. It was so good to see so many people in our churches over the Christmas period, from the school end of term Christingle Service and the Bread Service in St Giles, to the Carol Services in both churches. The collections at these services are given to children’s charities, which seems entirely appropriate at a time of the year when we focus on children. Children in need both in this country, through the Church of England Children’s Society, and abroad, through Save the Children. It was good too to see so many people around the Christmas Tree, singing carols on December 11th. Everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves despite it being very damp and bitterly cold.
This year we are looking forward to the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee. I know that plans are already well in hand for the celebrations. All these events are special in that they give us a good sense of community in the village, a sense of belonging. That is something that is very important to us all. The sense of community encourages us to be aware of the needs of others and to care for those in need. It is good to see and hear of acts of love and of care happening so often in the villages as well as pride in the churches and villages.
Unfortunately not everyone feels that sense of pride. It is very sad to see the damage done by vandals around South Mimms and particularly to St Giles Church and churchyard. It is so important that every act of wanton destruction and vandalism is reported to the police, so that they can build up a true picture of the extent of the trouble and hopefully put an end to it, so that we can feel safe and proud.
May God bless you all in 2012.
Rev’d. Brenda
